UPS Maintenance
How to correctly use and maintain the UPS
Startup & Shutdown: In order to prevent the impact current generated by the load at the instant of startup on UPS, there should be power supply for the UPS first so that it will be at the bypass work status. Then, gradually open the load. This can avoid the impact of the load current on UPS and extend the service life of UPS.
Before startup: First confirm whether the polarity of the input electric supply wiring is correct to ensure personal safety. Notice that the total load should be no larger than the rated power of UPS.
After shutdown: After interruption of the municipal electricity, UPS receives power supply from the battery pack and is automatically shut down. Never use the UPS battery pack for power supply and startup again so as to avoid excessive discharge of the battery which might cause damage. When the electric supply becomes abnormal and swifts to UPS battery pack power supply, the load and the machine should be turned off immediately. After the electric power becomes normal again, start the machine again.
Use environment: The use environment of the UPS should be clean, dustless and dray. A dusty and damp environment will cause abnormality of the UPS. The UPS battery pack has a high temperature requirement, which should not exceed the range of 15℃ to 30℃ for the best. Besides, UPS’s antimagnetic performance is poor. Therefore, the objects with a strong magnetism should not be put onto the UPS.
Battery maintenance: The UPS battery pack is usually found with the self-discharge phenomenon. If put aside unused for a long time, the battery pack might be damaged. Therefore, periodical discharge and charge are required. If the battery pack is overcharged because of improper use by the user, gases will be generated and the internal voltage of the battery pack will increase. Under serious conditions, the batteries will blow up, distort, suffer leakage or even rupture. If the phenomenon is observed, the battery pack should be immediately exchanged.
Caution: Since the voltage of the UPS battery pack is high, it might cause electric shock of the human body. Therefore, there should be safety measures taken when assembling or disassembling electric conductance connection lines and output lines. The tools adopted should have insulation design. Particularly, the output connecting points should have settings which are against electric shock.
Charging voltage: When the charging voltage is abnormal, the battery data might be wrong. When the battery pack is installed, the battery specifications and number should be correct. Meanwhile, different specifications and brands of batteries should be avoided from used together, and the externally-connected charger should not be bought at a low price.
Charging current: Similar to the UPS voltage requirements, when the UPS battery pack is charged or discharged, no excessive current should pass by. Though the UPS battery pack can accept certain degree of large current, it should be avoided as much as possible. Otherwise, the battery polar plates might be distorted, thus causing increase of the battery’s internal resistance. Under serious conditions, the battery volume might be seriously reduced, and the battery pack’s service life might be shortened seriously.
Discharge depth: The discharge depth of UPS has a huge influence on the battery’s service life. The deeper the battery’s discharge depth is, the fewer the circulating usages are. Therefore, in-depth discharge of the battery should be avoided in the process of use.
Load value: Ordinary users mostly think that, the larger the UPS load is, the better the protection effect on the computer is. The load for users’ practical application is just 30% or even less of the UPS rated load. This can also shorten the service life of UPS. After all, the internal battery packs cannot finish their work for most of the time. Of course, adoption of the rated load by 100% is not the best, and practice shows that 50% to 80% of the rated load is the best.
