How to Extend the Life of the UPS?
The uninterruptible power supply (UPS) should pay attention to the following aspects.
Initial charge
The newly-purchased UPS should be inserted into the 220V electric supply grid to get charged for more than 12 hours so that the batteries can be fully charged. If the UPS is left unused for a long time, it should be started for 24 hours every two to three months according to the storage environment. This can ensure the UPS to get fully charged, and that the UPS can work for two to three minutes under the work status of the inverter. Moreover, the normal life service of batteries can be guaranteed.
Reasonable selection of the installation position
A good installation position is very important to reliable and safe operation of the engine. The UPS storage position should have good ventilation, and be kept away from the water source, and inflammable, explosive and corrosive gases. The ambient temperature should be controlled at 22℃±3℃. When the ambient environment exceeds 25℃, temperature increase of every 10° will lead to shortening of the battery’s service life by half.
Turning-on and turning-off sequence
Below is the correct sequence for turning on and turning off: Turn on the UPS first and turn off the UPS by pressing on the switch. Following that, the UPS is loaded from larger ones to lower ones. This can prevent the instant current impact upon starting from causing damage to UPS. The turning-off sequence is just the opposite. First turn off various loads and then turn off the UPS. When the electric supply breaks off and is powered by UPS, the data and materials should be protected immediately, and then close the computer. Otherwise, the backup battery can be used for discharge, and the battery will automatically turn off after reaching the EOD point, thus causing data loss.
Not left unused for a long time
The accumulator might be left idle at an open circuit. If it is not used, the internal resistance of the accumulator will increase, leading to weakening of the charge and discharge performance. As to UPS left idle for a long time, the UPS can make use of the charge circuit within the machine for charging for more than 24 hours. As to the reserve UPS, the UPS can work for one to three hours at an inverter state for every three months to get the accumulator activated.
Use of the AC voltage stabilizer
When UPS is used, there is no need to introduce the AC voltage stabilizer. When the municipal electricity is unstable and the grid fluctuations are huge, the voltage stabilizer can be added before the UPS. In other words, the municipal electricity first passes the AC voltage stabilizer and then UPS to finally reach the load.
Avoidance of overload use
When the UPS is used, the load should be calculated to avoid the load to be too large or too small. When the load is too large, UPS can work for a long time under an overload state, thus shortening the service life of the UPS. If the load is too small, the UPS circuit will be under a light-load status for a long time, thus impairing the power operation efficiency.
Equalizing charge of the accumulator
The valve-control lead-acid accumulator used by many UPS is known as the non-maintenance battery. This has caused a misconception among many users. It seems that the battery is not just endurable, but also in need of no maintenance. When the accumulator in the UPS encounters the following conditions, the accumulator should receive equalizing charge. However, excessive discharge might lead to that the terminal voltage is lower than the nominal voltage regulated by the accumulator.
Not used for long-term power supply of the diesel engine
The UPS cannot be used by the diesel engine for long-term power supply. Its frequency often changes suddenly and has a large harmonic wave, this will influence reliable operation of the UPS.
Guarantee for good real-time monitoring
Currently, the intelligent UPS is equipped with remote real-time communication and program control. When the corresponding software is installed on the computer, the UPS can be connected via the series port or parallel port or Internet access to operate the monitoring procedures. In this way, the computer and UPS can be used for commutation.
